To extract keywords from your corpora, you will need a reference wordlist. The 100 million word BNC World Edition is an ideal reference corpus. You can download a word list based on the BNC World Edition here:

Yeah, WordSmith Tool has a function called KEYWORDS, which requires a wordlist.

first use WS to create a wordlist for your corpus (e.g. for buness English, academic English, or learner English); then start the keyword function of of WS, select the wordlist you jst created from the left panel and select the BNC wordlist from the right panel. you will be able to find which words are exceptionally common (positive keywords, on the top of the list) or uncommon (negative keywords, at the bottom of the list).

Noticed something interesting, the wordlist for WST3.0 is only about 4mb, while that for WST 4.0 is around 15mb, any reason?

The 16-bit Unicode Transformation Format (UTF-16) doubles the file size of an ASCII file.

wordlist必须用Wordsmith打开,否则肯定是乱码.

Dear Xiaoz,
First, thanks for your uploading of BNC wordlist. However, the BNC wordlist for wordsmith 3.0 contains around 166,962 words while the BNC wordlist for wordsmith 4.o contains about 512,588 wrods. Why is there such a big difference? Are they based on the same version of BNC?

In response to your enquiry, Wordsmith is far more happier when you have your corpus in your harddrive. I am from Liverpool with Mike Scott. I asked him this morning about your question, and he said online corpus is hectic and Wordsmith is not designed to process online corpra.
