How to count the words?

I have some texts with the the index information bracketed with angle brackets. Now I only need to count the words of the main body of the texts, i.e. the words of the index information must be excluded from the counting without being removed. I am wondering if there is any kind of software that can help? Your help will be highly appreciated.

Just follow either of the following links and download AntConc first.

Then do as follows:
Open the software package -> File -> Open file -> Setting -> Tag setting -> tick
Hide Tags (if any) -> OK -> choose Word List in the tool bar -> Press Start at the
bottom Done!

if you use Wordsmith Tools3.0,settings-> adjust settings -> tags-> tags to ignore -> activated.
