Word frequency eBook and dictionary

Mark Davies to CORPORA

You can now download from http://www.wordfrequency.info an eBook containing the 20,000 most frequent words in American English, in order of frequency. Each entry also contains 20-30 collocates (nearby words) and synonyms, which provide useful insight into the meaning and usage of each of the 20,000 words (see sample). This eBook is based on the 400 million word Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) -- the largest, most balanced, and most recent corpus of American English. Because of the corpus on which it is based, you can be sure that these words are the ones that you are most likely to encounter in the “real world”. We believe that this eBook offers you information that is not available from any other resource, and we invite you to use it to maximize your study of English vocabulary.

The eBook includes:

* the top 20,000 words/lemmas in English in rank frequency order (most to least frequent)

* 20-30 collocates (nearby words) for each entry, which give valuable insight into meaning and usage

* synonyms (for most words), which give additional insight into meaning

* indications of genre variation (e.g. more frequent in spoken, fiction, or academic)

* other frequency and distributional information
