Freely Available ESPS Software

ESPS/xwaves package is now available as a free download through the LDC. ESPS is an extensive set of signal processing programs that can be used, among other things, for the analysis, manipulation and labeling of speech.

ESPS (along with a set of interactive programs for signal display and annotation known as "xwaves") was developed at Entropic Research Laboratory and AT&T Bell Laboratories during the 1980s and 1990s. It was later released for free public-domain access through the good graces of AT&T and Microsoft after Entropic was acquired by Microsoft.

In 1998, the sources were given to KTH, Stockholm for free distribution. However, one of the ESPS libraries was missing from that version. The missing sources, which were part of Entropic's full source distribution, are included here. The code has also been augmented and edited to produce a source tree that compiles and runs on Mac OS-X 10.4x and on Fedora Core (and perhaps other modern Linux releases). The core ESPS signal-processing programs may eventually be released so as to compile under Cygwin to run under the Microsoft operating systems. Unfortunately it is not feasible to convert the graphically-oriented programs, such as xwaves, to run in the Cygwin environment.

This present release contains all of the original on-line documentation, and has the full functionality of ESPS/xwaves, except for hard-copy graphical output. It requires no license for compilation or use, but is released with absolutely no warranty or support.

The ESPS programs can be used either on their own or in conjunction with the xwaves graphical display front end. The source code for ESPS/xwaves has been released under a BSD-style free license.
