Yes, Tim Johns is a pioneer in computer-assisted learning and corpus-based studies.

Johns was perhaps among the first to realize the potential of corpora for language learners (e.g. Higgins and Johns 1984).

He has the amazing abilities to decipher the fine distinctions in the English language. I thought his kibbitzers are perfect materials to train graduate students in linguistics.

what kind of approach does the data-driven learning take? does it have application and empirical study in forign language teaching like efl context?

In fact DDL was initially proposed for EFL and was solidly situated in ELF, though maybe it is likely to be used in teaching other languages like Chinese as a foreign language - or is being used on one of the CALPER projects?
