What"s the traditional way of synonym analysis?

No, what i mean is analysis items,such as sense,grammar, emotion,collocation and so on. What I need is a theoratical support. Take it as an example, like Sinclair think "synonym analysis falls into ......aspects......" Something like that. Then I can follow the mould of the analysis.
