Dear all,

The Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS) Project is delighted to announce an update to our corpus, freely available online at www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk, on 27 September 2006.

The latest version of the Corpus now includes over 1000 texts in Scottish English and varieties of Scots, and a total of over 3.5 million words. Genres include informal correspondence, prose fiction and non-fiction, poetry, religious texts and administrative/political texts. A number of new spoken texts (conversations and interviews) are also now available, presented as audio/video files with synchronised orthographic transcriptions. These include some transcribed recordings from last summer's BBC Voices project (http://www.bbc.co.uk/voices/). Click here for an example text: http://www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk/corpus/search/document.php?documentid=1430

An Advanced Search System fully exploits SCOTS' extensive sociolinguistic metadata by allowing the user to build up a search profile
specifying sociolinguistic or textual criteria. Results can be displayed as a re-orderable concordance, or on an interactive map: http://www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk/corpus/search/document.php?documentid=1430

We encourage users to give us feedback on the SCOTS resource, including desired enhancements to the facilities and texts available, through our web-form or by email.

with kind regards,

The SCOTS team
