Eight Ph.D. Fellowships in Linguistics, 2008

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) announces the eight fellowships for study leading to Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics. Specializations must fall within the expertise of CLCG researchers.

The range of opportunities (specializations)
The positions will preferably be filled in one of the following research groups:
Syntax and Semantics
Discourse and Communication
Computational Linguistics
Language and Literacy Development across the Life Span
Language Variation and Language Change

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen
The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) is a research institute within the Faculty of Arts of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. It embraces all the linguistic research in the faculty. CLCG is a part of the Faculty's Graduate School for the Humanties.

A considerable number of CLCG researchers participate in the interdisciplinary Center for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN), and in the Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (LOT, the National Dutch graduate school in Linguistics). Within the CLCG there are six exciting research groups: Syntax/Semantics, Discourse and Communication, Language Variation and Change, Computational Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Language and Literacy Development over the Life Span. There are graduate students working in all of these groups.

Conditions:
  • The positions begin Sept 1, 2008. They all require residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research, and the stipends must result in a PhD dissertation.
  • Fellowship Stipends: Graduate students receive stipends of gross of more than ? 1500 per month, normally with slight cost-of-living increases in later years. Graduate student fellows receive a contract for one year extendible for three further years subject to evaluation after the first year.

Your profile:
  • a MA degree in Linguistics or a related field such as Computer Science, Psychology, etc (depending on the project)
  • preferably research experience in the relevant field
  • able to work independently
  • interest in interdisciplinary research
  • excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
  • willing to learn Dutch
  • see specific projects for additional desiderata, differing per project
