The government no longer allocate jobs for students.

检索项:allocate(& inflexion)
English major
... the colleges would [[allocate]] jobs for us. ...
... the government [[allocate]] jobs to them ...
... the school is responsible to [[allocate]] jobs. ...
… government will be responsible for [[allocating]] a job for him.
… China's government isn't responsible for [[allocating]] jobs.
… college leavers are automatically [[allocated]] jobs by the government.
… college leavers used to be [[allocated]] jobs by the government.
... the government can not [[allocate]] everyone a job. ...
... it's the government that [[allocate]] school and college leavers. ...

BNC:… develop a specialized staff function whose task is to allocate jobs to individual workers; and monitor performance against the rated time for the job. …
COBUILD:… the proposals to allocate more public sector jobs to people from lower castes …

此次检索还发现一例来自我国英文刊物Beijing Review的样本:… in the previous planned economy the state would always allocate jobs to citizens ...,可见用allocate jobs表示“分配工作”是一例典型的中国式英语。

Axe is a good one! I bet it could constitute a problem for many Chinese learners of English.

I truly appreciate the way you explained this matter. My thought was kind of jumbled. You truly shed some valuable light on what I mentioned and what I have in mind.

Does this still hold when "job" means "a specified duty or responsibility" or "a task"?

All instances of ALLOCATE JOB in the BNC World:

Many retired couples say that they have always shared the chores, but even a couple of the same sex sharing a home may have allocated each other certain jobs over the years, and need now to rethink who does what. (B3G)

The essentials of Taylorism involve the use of work-study engineers to study in fine detail the work an individual is doing; through detailed analysis develop the most efficient method of doing that work and establish a ‘fair’ time for performing particular elements of the task; develop a specialised staff function whose task is to allocate jobs to individual workers; and monitor performance against the rated time for the job. (CAN)

In spite of what the candidates may feel at the time, there is no stigma or criticism in being allocated a job flying something other than a fast jet: rescuing downed pilots in foul conditions or carrying out low level paratroop insertions in a Hercules are just as dangerous and demanding. (ECX)

Larger employers will have a cycle of recruitment with targets set in advance, so they should find it comparatively easy to allocate a specific number of jobs to Compact. (EVM)

Once you've established that you have the interest of around a dozen parents (the number can be bigger or smaller, although a circle can be rather unmanageable if too many people are involved), decide on a system of allocating sitting ‘jobs’ so each parent in the circle gets a fair share. (H07)

Thus the project wishes to focus on additiorial areas of injury including, managerial strategies, that is, the methods used to communicate the goals of the enterprise to the workforce; the work process, that is, the distribution of power and authority in the workplace and the divisions of the workers on the basis of income and status; migration, that is, the study of worker satisfaction, in as much as a stable working population is an indication of employee loyalty; ethnic and religious divisions, that is, whether religion and nationality was used to divide workers by allocating jobs on the basis of these factors; and, lastly, women and trade unionism, that is, the degree of workers' identification with an alternative loyalty structure to that of the enterprise. (HJ0)

We allocated various jobs and set about finding out the answers; monthly progress meetings were arranged. (HP6)

Andy Boyack, from the Rail Maritime and Transport Union, said: ‘The lads have all been allocated other jobs within the normal maintenance sections.’ (KE4)

My way is like this: it may be ok if I can't make it statistical, but it is definitely not ok if I don't have sufficient data to make it rational.

It appears that in English job typically refers to a task (with the possible exception KE4 above) when it collcates with ALLOCATE, while in Chinese, 分配工作 is more likely to mean offering a job as an occupation.

Whatever a job is, when it can be allocated, it can be allocated. I feel inclined to think about the following questions: Whether jobs can be allocated in reality and whether jobs, as a word, can cooccur with "allocate"? But is "分配" truly what I have in mind about "allocate"? I don't think so. What people have in mind when they use the phrase "分配工作" is job offers. How a job goes to a job seeker they don't even unconsciously care. The utterance of "分配工作" is but a product of tacit knowledge of language. ............... Blah! I should stop. This is not the right way to go. But somehow I have got better understanding about the following quote:
One of the strengths of corpus data lies in its empirical nature, which pools together the intuitions of a great number of speakers and makes linguistic analysis more objective (McEnery and Wilson 2001).

In my view, collocability is closely allied with word meanings. A printing job is different from a job meaning employment (to lose one's job). Allocating jobs to graduates was a 中国特色 collocation mirroring the 中国特色 practice.
